July Meeting - Shot(put) Through The Heart

Our July meeting was Shot(put) Through The Heart, the Buns & Roses pentathlon.

We had seven teams, each representing a different country, and five events:

Confectionery Shotput - Landing cherries on a cream cake
Embroidery Hoopla - Throwing embroidery hoops over button jars
Race for Tea - Tea cup and saucer race
Needle Sprint - Knit as many rows as you can in five minutes
The Cake Balance - Sing Jerusalem while balancing a cupcake on your head

It was great fun and quite challenging, with a healthy dose of friendly rivalry!

Thanks to all who took part and congratulations to the winners. Japan was the overall winning team and we had some very special Suffolk puff medals.

Buns & Roses went to Scarborough

Back in May we went on a Buns & Roses coach trip to Scarborough for the day. 

The lovely Kevin picked us up from Leeds and off we went to the North Yorkshire coast. There was no sunshine unfortunately but it did stay dry at least.

We all had a fab time wandering round and seeing the sights. We made sandcastles, visited the shops and markets, paddled in the sea, played in the arcades, went up the fernicular railway, sang karaoke, did a quiz on the coach, ate ice cream/doughnuts/chips, marvelled at the size of the seagulls, and so on and so forth.

Buns & Roses and the LUDUS Festival

One of the really great things about Leeds (and there are many) is the cultural goings-on. We are inspired, motivated, amazed and intrigued by all the fabulous festivals, shows, community events and activities that take place each year to help people explore and understand our city.

And even better is that Buns & Roses WI often gets to be involved.

At the end of June we helped out with the LUDUS festival, a new venture in contemporary performing arts that celebrates Leeds as an international centre of excellence in theatre and performance.

We were tasked with helping people on a section of the City Walk, a stroll through Leeds to help people encounter the city in a different way.

As the WI was set up to educate women, we had to educate participants as they came through a section near the Rose Bowl car park.

We did this in two ways - passing on a piece of writing by the philosopher De Certeau about walking in the city (with notes to make it more relevant to Leeds) and by making sure they knew about road safety when crossing the road.

All great fun and just one of the things we do at Buns & Roses to get involved with our community.

June meeting - Pics Don't Lie

Our June meeting was Pics Don't Lie, an evening of photography hints and tips.
Before we get started with whatever activity or presentation we have that evening we always have to go through the business. This includes updates on what we are planning, news from the West Yorkshire Federation and National Federation, information from our sub-committees and anything else of interest.
In June we had two particularly exciting things to announce.
Firstly, the winners of our photo competitions during our day trip to Scarborough.

We also drew the winner for our Denman Bursary, which gave one lucky Member vouchers towards a course at the College.
And the winner was Alex Spence. Well done Alex, we can't wait to hear all about your visit.
Then it was on to our speakers for the evening - Nicola and Ian from Leeds Photographic Society.
They gave an excellent presentation and shared lots of hints and tips to help us make the most of our cameras, whether we use a DSLR or just snap away on our smartphones.
(Despite the excellent advice from Nicola and Ian we still had problems getting a decent shot of them "in action" with the lights turned down!)
