March Workshop -Papercraft Writer

Wednesday, 18 March 2015 § 0

For March's workshop we were joined by Buns & Roses' member Bev, from a Dog Called Dill, who taught the group how to make cards and fab home decor frames.

Everyone was given a box frame and scrabble tiles to create amazing pictures as well as all they needed to make some gorgeous cards.

Bev was a fab teacher who passed on some great hints and tips and as always the group went home with some great finished pieces.

Don't Worry Be(ad) Happy - February Meeting - Beading and General Meeting

Sunday, 8 March 2015 § 0

Due to popular demand our Roses in our members survey last year requested that they would very much like more of an opportunity for a good natter... so we listened and this was the first of our general meetings.

After the business part of the meeting had been discussed, it was over to some good crafting.

Buns & Roses added a good number of beads, wire and fixings to the craft stash and we all got our pliers out to make some interesting wearable craft.

We also welcomed a number of new faces into the Buns & Roses fold and initiated them with teaching them how to make a Suffolk Puff!

Hard Days Light - February Workshop - Conductive Thread Embroidery

§ 0

We all love a bit of embroidery at Buns & Roses and if it was possible founder member Hayley Mills-Styles has found it a way to make thread work even more exciting - with electricity!

Hayley talked us through the excitement of sewing with conductive thread and how to treat the individual components.  Having taught children how to sew with conductive thread Hayley was well equipped to deal with all sewing (and gluing abilities!).

We got stuck in with felt, sequins and colour changing LEDs!

The results were all very varied, but all really impressive!

Hayley's website is here if you would like to know more about her work - http://hayleymillsstyles.com/

Smells Like WI Spirit - January Meeting

Friday, 6 February 2015 § 0

We kicked the new year off to a great start with a discussion around the 7 shortlisted resolutions from national which.  Members of the committee read out the key points and the pros and cons to each resolution and then members took a vote on which Buns & Roses should put forward to federation.

1. The next 100 years As we mark 100 years of the WI, we deplore the unacceptable level of gender discrimination that still exists. We call on decision makers to remove barriers preventing today’s women and future generations reaching their full potential.

2. Plant a tree for the future The NFWI urges Her Majesty’s government to start a continuous national broadleaf tree planting programme to replace vital woodlands lost in previous decades. WIs in consultation with their local councils and community groups will be asked to plant trees in celebration of their centenary and to benefit future generations.

3. Public access defibrillators There is an urgent need to widen public access to defibrillators to significantly increase the survival rate following a cardiac arrest. This meeting urges WI members to work with their communities to install public access defibrillators.

4. Failing to care – assessment of need in long-term care This meeting calls on HM government to remove the distinction between nursing care and personal care in the assessment of the needs of individuals, in order to advance health and wellbeing.

5. Cutting back on food waste Everybody loses when good food is thrown away. We call on WI members to reduce their own food waste and all public and private sector organisations to do more to minimise food waste and protect our finite resources.

6. Ending FGM This AM welcomes the progress that has been made towards ending Female Genital Mutilation. We call on political leaders and the UK public to maintain momentum behind all efforts to eradicate this abuse of human and child rights. 2

7. To curb the use of antibiotics In view of the problem of increased microbial resistance to antibiotics, this meeting urges HM government to work with health professionals and the public to raise awareness of, and encourage the appropriate use of, antibiotics in human and animal healthcare.

We then ended the meeting with a good healthy bout of crafting and some new ladies learned the skill of making a suffolk puff for the first time - hooray!

Jingle Buns - December Meeting

Sunday, 28 December 2014 § 0

IMerry Christmas and Happy New Year from Buns & Roses!

As usual, being the WI we know how to put on a good spread!!!  We were able to gorge on an enticing buffet stacked with crisps, dips, cocktail sausages, peanuts, mince pies, chocolate log, smoked salmon mousses and lots of home made festive treats from our members including a very intense chocolately rockie road type confection!

Once we'd gone through the business part of the meeting once again it was on with the cheesy xmas songs, sampling the delights of the buffet, chatting and the making of suffolk puffs with festive fabric.

Gemma won the quiz and was most triumphant and everyone enjoyed a relaxing a social evening chatting and getting to know each other.  Sam taught a number of our members the important skill of how to make a Suffolk Puff!!

A big thank you to all our members, guests, speakers, workshop leaders, committee and helpers who have helped make 2014 a success - and here's to 2015 - our WI centenary year!

Details of all our meetings and workshops can be found at www.bunsandroses.co.uk we look forward to seeing you at a meeting or workshop soon.

Coffeecabana - November Meeting - Coffee Tasting

Tuesday, 2 December 2014 § 0

At our November meeting we welcomed the lovely people from Layne’s Espresso who led us in a cupping session. We tried ‘good’ coffee and ‘bad’ coffee learned about where coffee comes from and the process of making it.

While we were trying the coffees and learning about the process of making a great cuppa joe. We asked many, many questions about the wonderful drink and the lovely Dave shone in his knowledge answering every one. Regaling us with tales of cold water coffee and the amazing airopress.

We all had an amazing night and with the amount of coffee we drank it stayed amazing till the small hours of the morning.
