March meeting - There's No Business Like Grow Business

Wednesday, 27 March 2013 § 0

Our March meeting was There’s No Business Like Grow Business and we were joined by Mary of Incredible Edible Todmorden.

Mary came along to tell us all about this amazing organisation which grows and campaigns for local food. From herb gardens in schools to vegetable plots outside police stations, Incredible Edible is involved in all sorts of projects that highlight locally grown produce.

Incredible Edible is now an international campaign and more and more communities are getting on board.

Mary was a wonderful speaker and told us with enthusiasm, humour and good nature about all the things the organisation has been involved in. She even had an anecdote about Prince Charles agreeing to leave his land to them!

At the end our Jen gave us all some seeds so we can grow some of our own veg and herbs. Now we just have to hope for some sunshine!

Unfortunately we were so enthralled with Mary's inspiring talk that we forgot to take photos of her! We did get some of our Roses though.

March workshop - Papa Brooch

Wednesday, 13 March 2013 § 0

For our March workshop, entitled Papa Brooch, we had Gemma and Hayley helping people to make Kanzashi flower brooches and fascinators.

Armed with a MASSIVE pile of fabric and a table full of ribbons, buttons, sequins and thread, our ladies had the opportunity to get creative for a couple of hours and make their own accessories.

There was plenty of folding and gluing, lots of feathers flying around and buttons galore. By the end most people had finished at least one of their projects, so this year our Roses will be looking gorgeous at their parties.

February meting - Morris men

Monday, 25 February 2013 § 0

Our February meeting was a little off the wall and definitely one of our most unusual and energetic sessions to date.

We were joined by a whole troupe of Morris men and women, thanks to our lovely member Sarah who had managed to co-ordinate them to perfection.

Sarah lives and breathes Morris dancing so told us all about the history and traditions, the various styles and costumes.

Then there were some demonstration dances, complete with accordion players, before we got to have a go.

It was hard work trying to find rhythm and co-ordination for several of us, but great fun was had by all.

A massive thank you to the dancers from Leeds Morris Men, Liggate Breeds, Wayzgoose and Rhubarb Tarts who came to share their passion with us.

And a big hello to the many new faces who came along and joined in - we promise not every meeting requires as much energy!

February workshop - Needle felting

Monday, 11 February 2013 § 0

Our February workshop was Needle in a Wool Top where we had the chance to try out needle felting.

The session was led by our friend Katie of Japan Crafts who always impresses us with her knowledge and talents.

For those who have never come across needle felting before, you should know that it requires the use of very sharp barbed needles. This meant that we had to concentrate rather hard on what we were doing and spend a little less time chatting! There were plenty of plasters in case of accidents but fortunately no blood was drawn.

The process involves taking some wool fibres and shaping and felting them by repeatedly stabbing them with the needle. This knits the fibres together. The work is done on a sponge square and we used cookie cutters to make simple shapes before moving on to felt beads, animals and pictures.

The results were very impressive.

January Meeting - C'Mon C'mon do the Motivation

Thursday, 24 January 2013 § 0

Our January meeting was entitled C'Mon C'mon do the Motivation: A Daily Dose of Vitamin P! and we were joined by Jane Bytheway. In simple terms, Jane is a confidence and positivity enthusiast and works with people to help them bring happiness, and therefore success, into their daily lives.

As she puts it: "A Daily Dose of Vitamin P will equip you with the most important thing you need to know to make those dreams come true. You will take away a range of actionable tips and ideas that you can use straight away to ensure you are on the pathway to success … whatever that looks like for you."

Jane helped us to recognise our achievements and things we should be proud of and positively encouraged everyone to put on their "glasses of joy" each day to see the good things in life.

As part of the session we all came up with cheap or free things we can do to give ourselves a dose of vitamin P. You can find the full list here: A Daily Dose of Vitamin P.
As you will read, Boston Spa WI have also enjoyed Jane's talk recently so there are some ideas from our fellow WI ladies there too.

December meeting - It's My (Christmas) Party

Monday, 10 December 2012 § 0

On a rainy and cold night in Leeds we had the warmth of Christmas spirit for our Buns & Roses Christmas meeting.  Unfortunately not everyone was able to make it there, including Hayley and Gemma who were stuck on the M62 in snow on the way back from Manchester and didn't get back in time to join in with our festivities.

There was an incredible spread of food including a fabulous cheese ball from Susan Spence and some great cakes and moose biscuits from Sam Cullen - thanks to all the Roses who contributed to the Fuddle.

High Spirits Choir in some lovely Christmas jumpers then performed for us some festive songs including a special Buns & Roses version of the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Official Buns & Roses Magician Magic Al then made his way around the room and showed off some of his awesome magic tricks.  He even did some mind reading tricks - very spooky!  Al was also kind enough to draw our raffle which had some amazing prizes such as:

£20 Fazenda Voucher
Tea for Two at York Cocoa House
Bettys Coffee & Tea
Abel & Cole Organic Vegetable Box Voucher
£5 Japan Crafts Voucher
And an amazing knitted scarecrow!

Thanks to everyone who kindly donated raffle prizes.

The rest of the evening was a lot of fun chatting, crafting and eating.

Merry Christmas from Buns & Roses and see you in the new year.

November Meeting – Florence (Nightingale) and the Machine.

Thursday, 22 November 2012 § 0

Our November meeting was Florence (Nightingale) and the Machine, a talk from Marianna Shapland from Leeds  Women’s Health Matters.
Marianna spoke to us about the many groups and information services which Women’s Health Matters supports, from its work with women who are experiencing domestic violence, to its ‘SEEN’ group for people with various disabilities and its ‘SHINE’ group which provides information about sexual health.
As well as giving us lots of information about these groups she also gave us information on sexual and breast heath, including showing us a mock-up breast with lumps to show us how to feel properly for potential problems.
Marianna also explained to us the value of the clothes and items we had donated, telling us how much they will be welcomed, and how urgently they are needed.
Afterwards Marianna took questions from people and expressed that if anybody did want to volunteer with them, supporting people with English, emotional support or just generally helping out to contact her at Women’s Health Matters. She also told us how essential all donations of winter clothes, hats, scarves, umbrellas and hot water bottles are, so we will be doing another collection for them at our December meeting.
