Buns & Roses goes global!

Wednesday, 31 August 2011 § 0

August's Book Club took place at Dock Street Market on Sunday, 21st and our read was The Last Block in Harlem by Christopher Herz.

After discussing the book, we were very honoured to be joined by Christopher via the wonders of Skype.

It was great fun to be able to speak directly with the author and get a bit of a sneak peek into his New York life.

This is what he woke up to on Sunday morning! As we enjoyed a glass of wine on a lovely sunny afternoon, Christopher was on the strong coffee!

We would all recommend the book, so do please give it a read!

You can find out more at Herz Words or follow Christoper on Twitter @herzwords.

August meeting - Home Sweet Sewn

Saturday, 20 August 2011 § 0

Our August meeting was Home Sweet Sewn - a chance to make some cute accessories for your pad.

It was our last at the Leeds Deaf Social Club and we went out with a bang, with lots of people joining us for the first time and many lovely things being created.

We were also visited by Owen Jackson from the Leeds Chamber of Commerce, who spoke to use about the wealth of business help and advice available for anyone looking to set out on their own. It was very useful to have a chat with him, especially about the opportunities at Leeds Kirkgate Market.

From next month our new home is the Cosmopolitan Hotel on Lower Briggate, so pleasde come along and see us there!

August workshop - Crazy (Patchwork) Horses

Friday, 5 August 2011 § 0

Last night (Thursday, 4 August) was our monthly workshop.

Entitled Crazy (Patchwork) Horses, we had Hayley teaching us how to do crazy patchwork and make a little purse.
It certainly kept us all quiet as we stitched on our bits of fabric!
The idea is to add randomly shaped and coloured pieces to create a crazy effect!
Keep adding pieces until the backing fabric is covered.
Like this!

Then, stitch them all down nicely, either by hand or using a machine.
Then you can line it and stitch it up as a little coin purse. The template we used is just the right size for it to be a business card holder as well.

Total Eclipse of the Tart - 80s party!

Tuesday, 2 August 2011 § 0

On Friday, July 29th, the Buns & Roses Social Committee hosted their first big event – an 80s party called Total Eclipse of the Tart.
We had lots of members and friends join us for an evening of reminiscing and there were some fantastic outfits.
Helen won the prize for Best Dressed Female
It’s not everyday you see Boy George, Princess Diana and Del Boy in the same room!
As well as dancing and a few beverages, the committee had done us all proud with a fantastic nibbles selection, posters and clips from the era and karaoke. They had even recreated news broadcasts from the era.
Zoe AKA Joan Collins belting one out
And there was Jen’ll Fix It to make dreams come true and Cilla Black (aka Gemma) joined us for a couple of rounds of Blind Date!
The Blind Date couples enjoying a romantic meal
All-in-all, it was a marvellous evening, and Zoe, Helen, Sam and Jen did a fantastic job.
Here’s to the next one!
