The evening began with Clare-Marie showing us the set of jewellery that we would be making.

Clare-Marie then demonstrated how to make the bracelet, using three strands which were woven together using the beads.

Clare-Marie was on hand to help out anyone who got a bit stuck and lost in the instructions.

As well as providing everyone with some top tips about how to keep their strands in check, there was also a couple of different ways to attach clasps for us to try.

Full instructions were also provided but Clare-Marie talked us through and showed us what to do at each step.

Everyone was able to make at least one set of jewellery to take home withe the enthusiasm to make many more sets!

There are researching the involvement of families in the hospital care of patients with Dementia.

Dementia is an umbrella term for various diseases which impact the brain. Alzheimer’s is a common type, caused by the build-up of protein. Pick’s disease is another – recently shown on the programme The Trouble With Dad with David Baddiel.

Dementia does not just occur in old people and not all old people suffer from Dementia.

It is also not just about losing your memory, you can lose communication skills, logical reasoning, sequencing skills and perception can all be affected.

Cara gave us a good explanation of how dementia can affect a person See http://dementiapartnerships.com/resource/dementia-friends-bookcase-analogy/ for details

Adaptions can be made once problems diagnosed e.g. an elderly person who has lost recent memories may only remember boiling a kettle by putting it on the cooker, in which case you would get them that type of kettle rather than an electric one.

Rachel shared some statistics:

25% of patients in General Hospitals have Dementia (though they may be in there for a variety of reasons)

They often have a poorer experience of care and are distressed, disoriented and unable to communicate their problems.

This can have serious consequences such as malnutrition, dehydration, infection, delirium, higher mortality rates, more like to end up in institutional care.

For 50% of those patients the Dementia is not diagnosed.

These patients are 3 times more likely to die during their stay then non-Dementia sufferers.

A third of them did live at home but then did not return home and ended up in some kind of care.

Their hospital stays last twice as long.

Personal knowledge about a patient which is gained when Friends and Family are involved in the support and care can improve the patient’s experience of and outcomes from care. E.g. knowing that a patient always eats toast for breakfast and need their routine so refuses a breakfast of cereal in hospital.

But Hospitals are not always welcoming to visitors so there are a few things going on to address this:

The WI Campaign https://www.thewi.org.uk/campaigns/current-campaigns-and-initiatives/carers-welcome

John’s Campaign http://johnscampaign.org.uk/#/

NHS Incentives for Hospitals to take some measures to improve this e.g. rooms for carers to stay, more flexible visiting hours.

Rachel has done a PHD on the impact of Family involvement in care.
In 2016 there were only 9 published studies and these did not involve all 3 parties (patient, medical professionals, family) and focussed on interviews and physical care. Rachel spent 9 months per ward she studied across different NHS trusts.

She carried out interviews but also hours of observations where she sat and watched what was happening, she also had permission to attend meetings with the medical staff and was able to build a story of an individual’s hospital stay. She discovered that there was were lots of causes of disconnects in the care of Dementia patients.

The hospital environment is very clinical

Very busy

Patients felt unsafe

They questioned why they were there

There are unfamiliar routines

They are surrounded by strangers

They are not in their own clothes

The food is different

They had no personal belongings

Staff were too busy

The wards were staffed for patient’s physical needs

Conflicting priorities – short visiting hours to minimise risk of infection

Some visitors would never meet the medical team covering most of their relatives care e.g. they visit in the evening when that shift has gone home

Patients not always involved in decisions

But where there was a Connect this resulted in a better experience

Family being around

Staff have specialist training e.g. making a connection with a patient whilst carrying out a routine task e.g. during time taken to bathe a patient

Make the ward a more homely environment

Knowledge from the family e.g. that one gentleman always said Yes and No the wrong way around

Staff finding out a fact about that person which would trigger a conversation e.g. I hear you used to work in the mill

The current research programme is gathering more evidence about the positive impact of involving family & friends. They are developing a set of guidelines for involving family & friends.
They are developing and testing ways of involving family & friends to meet their needs as well as those of patients and medical staff.

Also people without families need to be considered – what can be done to improve their outcomes?

What can you do?

Make more Twiddlemuffs http://www.leedshospitalsfundraising.org.uk/downloads/TwiddleMuffs.pdf

Support & Promote the WI Campaign

Encourage hospitals to do more

Become a Dementia Friend or even a Dementia Friend’s Champion (https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk/) – this is a social movement about becoming more Dementia friendly with organisations like the Police and Supermarkets getting training.

You can sign up to varying commitments from being more aware and generally supportive to spending time with a specific individual.

The committee presented the shortlisted resolutions:

1. Alleviating loneliness

This meeting calls on every WI and the NFWI to work alongside health and social care providers and their local community to raise awareness of the causes and impacts of loneliness, thus ensuring better identification of lonely people in order to be able to offer them the appropriate assistance and support.

2. FGM: More Awareness for More Action

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has been illegal in the UK for over 30 years and the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003 made it illegal to aid, abet or procure the carrying out of FGM abroad. However, there have been no successful prosecutions of those involved. The NFWI calls on the government to improve efforts to measure and disclose the prevalence of FGM in the UK and to take further action to help secure more successful prosecutions of those involved in this abusive practice and thereby advance the health of women who have suffered or may be at risk of suffering FGM.

3. Equal access for all who need specialised maternal mental health services

There is presently an acute shortage of quality specialised maternal mental health services, meaning that many vulnerable women, their babies, and families face a postcode lottery of perinatal mental health support. The NFWI calls on NHS commissioners to prioritise the development of specialised perinatal mental health support services so that pregnant and postnatal women, their babies, and families are able to access the support they need.

4. Provision of appropriate welfare and safe spaces for women and children in refugee camps

Millions of women and children are fleeing conflict and disaster around the world, finding themselves at risk of violence, abuse and exploitation in refugee camps. This meeting calls on all WI members and the NFWI to raise awareness of the risks facing women and children refugees and push for action to ensure they have access to safe places to eat and sleep, to get the care they need and space to learn and play.

5. Supporting women’s refuges

Many women and children rely on refuges to escape violence and abusive relationships, but in recent years refuges have faced significant cuts to their services. The NFWI calls upon the Government to safeguard refuges and increase service provision in areas without adequate support.

6. Plastic Soup: Keep micro plastic fibres out of our oceans

Micro plastic fibres are shed from synthetic clothing with every wash and are the main contributors to micro plastic contamination of the oceans. The NFWI calls on Government and industry to research and develop innovative solutions to this problem in order to stop the accumulation of micro plastic fibres in our oceans.

Every member had the opportunity to select which resolution they would like to see put forward for voting at the Annual Meeting (AM).
In mid Feb - NFWI Board of Trustees meets to finalise list of resolutions for the AM agenda, based on the number of selection votes from members, progress of existing campaigns and key developments on the resolutions. AM resolution(s) sent from the NFWI to all federations after the Board meets and further briefing notes are published on the NFWI website and Moodle.
AM resolution(s) published in April’s WI Life magazine.

At our May meeting we will review resolution(s) to be voted on at the AM and decide whether we want to vote in favour or against the resolution.

The committee had prepared a quiz, but we were actually too distracted to do – never mind it will keep until next year!

All of our members brought some food for a fuddle and there was a great selection as always.

The most exciting point of the entire evening was the Secret Santa – some great gifts were exchanged!

We had set up a book swap with a few books being exchanged, the rest were donated to charity.

A prize draw to win your 2017 membership – well done to our winner
(money raised will go to WYF as we did not do a sporting event/WI fortnight activity in September)

A craft activity – we made clay Christmas decorations as per the following - http://www.brightbazaarblog.com/2013/12/how-to-make-stylish-clay-christmas-ornaments.html

Leeds Mind was founded in 1972 and now has 4 sites across the city – HQ in Horsforth, Kirkstall, Beeston and Chapel Allerton. They have around 50 staff but rely on 150 volunteers to provide their services.

They are a registered as a charity in their own right, but are affiliated to the national Mind charity and assessed every 3 years to maintain this.

1 in 4 will experience mental health issues
It is estimated to cost the economy 105 billion a year

The charity shops are run by the national Mind charity which is a campaigning organisation. A percentage of the profits from the shop go towards grants for the local Mind charities.

A 5 Year Forward Plan for Mental Health has been produced – this contains many of the figures and some of the general information shared by Helen – follow this link for more information.

Leeds Mind offer counselling, group therapy, social support, peer support, self-directed support, social prescribing, housing support, employment support, suicide bereavement support, and mental health training – many of these are run by people who have gone through the sessions themselves.

They are recovery focussed and work with people to achieve their goals to live the life they want.

They have a 30% success rate in getting people with mental health difficulties into paid employment against 9% from the DWP. They encourage self-help and self-management and are looking to set up some courses in Mindfulness next year.

(A lady in the room recommended https://www.bemindfulonline.com)

Leeds Mind is a lead for Mindful Employers - https://mindfulemployerleeds.com - this is a charter for Employers who are Positive About Mental Health.

The Chapel Allerton site is a community arts centre – Inkwell
http://www.inkwellarts.org.uk

Here they run courses as part of the Social Prescribing agenda and also fundraise through the running of a café. There are plans in place to build a training kitchen and have more exhibition and studio space.

There are now Mental Health First Aid courses - http://mhfaengland.org

For more general information or if you or anyone you know needs help/advice go to

The Mindwell site which was launched on World Mental Health Day (10th October) – it is the go-to site for information and assistance on mental health issues.

For young people there is Mindmates https://www.mindmate.org.uk

The meeting closed shortly after 9:00 and Helen was thanked for a very engaging and informative talk.Buns & Roseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08942011593906466539noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2924719233912565634.post-62206016081805124062017-06-28T07:40:00.000-07:002017-06-28T07:40:06.670-07:00Wrapper’s Delight - November WorkshopBack by popular demand, Bev from A Dog Called Dill joined us for a Christmas themed crafty evening.

The room was all set up when guests arrived, ready to dig in and enjoy the papercraft evening.

Bev began by showing us all how to use the guillotine to make the perfect toppers for our cards. She also demonstrated how to make the perfect Christmas decoration and topper for Christmas cards and lables.

Once we'd chosen our design it was just a matter of fitting all of the pieces together. As always Bev was on hand to gives us all some hints and tips in regards to putting everything together.

This was done with gusto as everyone tried to get as much done as possible before the end of the session. I think some people even finished all of their designs!
Dea Latis is a group formed to change women’s perceptions about beer and encourage more women to consider beer as a drink of choice.

Annabel has over 25 years experience in the beer industry and shared her passion and knowledge with us over a few drinks & nibbles ….

We tried 5 beers in total

1) A wheat beer with smoked salmon

This was Erdinger Weissbier, this is slightly cloudy due to a protein in the wheat which cannot be brewed out.
The beer is light and not bitter. The beer cut through the fattiness of the smoked salmon.

2) A pilsner with Chorizo

Pilsner Urquell - a type of lager. Lager has only been around since the 1840’s but now makes up 90% of total beer consumed globally. Lager was discovered by accident when some beer was left in some ice caves and the yeast mutated. The term pilsner can only be used if particular Czech barley and hops are used, otherwise the term pils is used indicate a pilsner style beer.
We could smell toffee and caramel with this one, once tasted there were waves of flavours including some bitterness. The chorizo made it taste less bitter

3) A pale ale with mature cheddar cheese

Timothy Taylor’s Landlord – this one was amber in colour – actually a lot light than the original beers brewed but the steps made in the industrial revolution meant that brewing became more consistent. This beer is made from barley from Scotland or Northumberland and Hopes from Kent. We could smell toast and marmalade. The word to describe how the beer and cheese tasted together seemed to be yum.
We drank the bottled version which is pasturised, normally this is hand-pulled. If your pint if warm and flat, it is not being stored correctly – when Annabel was an inspector 13% of pubs failed with temperature of the beer being the main reason why.

4) An abbey ale with brie

Leffe Blond – which is derived from a beer originally brewed by Trappist monks but is now sold commercially.
These beers tend to be a bit stronger and are sipping beers.
They are popular in northern Europe.
The monks were literate, clean and patient - this led to good beer which they were able to sell to support the upkeep of their monasteries
This beer has added sugar and smells of vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon.
The sweetness of the beer completed the creaminess of the brie.
There are still 7 Trappist breweries left (6 in Belgium, 1 in France) – their beer is marked with a hexagon

5) A Kriek with Chocolate Brownies

Bacchus Kriek – made with all natural ingredients, not flavorings. Whole cherries including the stones are added to the fermenting vessels. The style of this beer is a Lambic which is fermented by being exposed to will yeasts in the atmosphere (specifically found in Belgium). We could smell marzipan and cherries, when combined with a chocolate brownie or some bonus dark chocolate, we got black forest gateau

As well as using their cooking facilities, we were also able to use up some of the surplus ingredients - which The Real Junk Food Project rescues and re-uses rather than ending up in landfill.

The lovely Teresa set up all of the ingredients for us and helped set up cooking stations for all those enrolled on the workshop.
Sue Bond was the tutor for the workshop and she came armed with a number of recipes to make the most of the surplus fruit. There were some wild and wacky combinations including a fruity melon number and even a caramelized banana jam!

Surplus food at the cafe - all of which has been diverted from landfill.

After donning our aprons Sue explained the basics of jam making and we chose our ingredients and set to work.

Firstly we popped our jars in the oven to sterilize, after which we set about weighing and measuring all of our ingredients. After a few minutes of boiling, the first jam was ready for potting up!

It was such a fun evening and everyone went home with at least one pot of jam which they were really happy with.
Angela owns and runs Swithens Farm with her husband Ian.

Angela explained that Ian’s mother and father moved to the farm as tenants in 1963 when her husband was 5 years old. It was originally part of the Calverly Estate which had Oulton Hall as its manor house.

They grew potatoes and other vegetables on the farm to sell at the farm gate, kept livestock and ran a livery stable, where a young Angela kept her horse (and the rest as they say is history).

In the 1990s they converted to pig-farming in a big way and did very well out of it until that market crashed and they had to do all they could to avoid bankruptcy. They then started to covert old farm buildings into stables to build up the livery side again – they started with 4 and now have 110.

The in-laws retired in 2005 and at the same time the farm went up for sale – it was sold to company in the Isle of Man but when it went bankrupt Angela and Ian had to decide between a massive financial undertaking or losing the business they had rebuilt so far. They went for it and got a massive mortgage to buy the farm from the bank. They could not afford to buy the farmhouse, which in the end was bought by a close friend.

After a while as well as continuing to run the livery service they needed to decide what direction to follow to take the business forward – should they fully invest in cows & pigs (after their previous experience) or the farm shop route. Following advice from their friends at Blacker Hall Farm, Angela and Ian decided on the farm shop route. Along with the farm shop came a café, a play barn and animals.

See http://www.swithensfarm.co.uk for more information.

If you visit, for a small entrance fee, you will see sheep, ducks, llamas, alpacas, donkeys, ponies, goats, cows, pigs including former pet pigs, chickens, rabbits and Meer cats

Angela gets given animals (Meer cats) or they find her (a stray cow!)

They also breed cows, pigs and sheep to supply the farm shop.
These animals are largely fed on the vegetables, grown on a neighbouring farm which the supermarkets reject. Swithens Farm collect 2 trailer loads a day!

The animals go to the most local abattoir possible for slaughter and then go back to the farm to be butchered.

The farm is a family business with Angela’s two daughters aged 28 and 30 managing the petting farm and the stable yard respectively.

Also Angela’s ‘retired’ parents help out either in the shop, as a carrot chopper or baking for the café.
The farm hosts all kind of events from kids’ parties in the play barn to the occasional tea dance.
There’s a dog training centre, a garden centre and an indoor riding arena on site and Swithens also plays host to horse shows.

Swithens Farm does a lot to support local and diverse groups including:

Free entry for disabled people

A dementia friendly café

All areas are totally accessible by wheelchair and double buggy (although not all will manage the tractor ride)

Local crafts for sale in the shop

Regular donations of equestrian equipment from the livery yard to Hope pastures

Supporting Candlelighters and Little Hiccups

Horses are still one of Angela’s passions – she has 3 and did do some show jumping but has now taken up dressage. She is has bred a foal from her dressage horse which just that day had been sent away to be schooled.

Angela brought some free range eggs for us to purchase and they seemed to disappear very quickly. She explained that these come from their brood of 300 chickens – they get around 200 eggs a day. They buy young chicks at the age when they are about to start laying but unlike commercial free range egg production they keep the chickens until they die naturally even when they have stopped laying.

Interestingly the square starts with a circle! A slip knot is formed and then slip stitches for the base of the square.
Our highly anticipated August meeting saw our lovely roses blingin' up some ordinary items - who doesn't love a bit of sparkle!

There was a choice of wine glasses, tea lights and hair clips with some guests and members bringing their own items to bling up.

To start we we joined by the lovely Sally and Karine from 'Fit to Bust'. As well as sharing their knowledge on bra fitting, and telling us that the straps are not meant to be the main support (who knew!) The ladies also told us about the best way to actually put your bra on which is: 1. put arms in the strap, 2. bend forwards, 3. fasten the bra at the back 4. pull the wire away, 5. move breasts in to position within the cups.

They gave us a marvellous demonstration of this technique. If you fasten your bra at the front and then twist it around, you risk damaging the bra.

Fit to Bust also hold fitting parties for a minimum of 6 people, contact Sally or Karine at fittobust for more details.

Our next guest was Breast Care Nurse, Belinda Archer who talked us through some breast cancer facts.

The cause of breast cancer is not known but is understood to be multi-factorial including; genes, lifestyle and diet. Belinda advised us to all get ourselves into a position to lower our risk of breast cancer - keep healthy, eat healthy, be breast aware.

Self-examination is good but you may just as easily find something in the shower whilst washing or during sex. 76% of women experience breast pain during their lifetime - this is not a typical symptom of cancer. Know the signs. NHS symptoms checker

There are many treatments for breast cancer and the size of the cancer relative to the breast will determine is a mastectomy or lumpectomy is required. Radiotherapy is used to kill cancer cells in the remaining tissue and Chemotherapy will most likely be used if the cancer has reached the lymph nodes.

In 25 years the survival rate from breast cancer has increased from 50% to 80% which is an amazing statistic.

NB to verify the accuracy of this information please check with your GP or use other resources such as: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Cancer-of-the-breast-female/Pages/Introduction.aspx, https://www.macmillan.org.uk/, http://breastcancernow.org/
On Thursday 7 July 2016 Buns

On arrival at the Cosmopolitan
Hotel the attendees were greeted by the dance teacher, to be known as Madam
Vivalicious (who runs a Wiggle and Giggle group) and a glass of prosecco with a
strawberry and given a chocolate treat and an all important feather boa (colour
of their choice).

The workshop began with all
the attendees sat in a semi circle while Madame Viv explained how she came
about Wiggle and Giggle. Burlesque is often seen as very extravagant and
risqué but Viv wanted to make it fun and accessible to all (even shy
people!).

many things worse to do on a hot summer’s eve, than walk around a peaceful lake

you are waking around being shown where to forage the items to make your own

The Eurovision Wrong Contest - Quiz Night - May 2016

There aren’t many things that are so wrong they become right, but Eurovision is certainly one of those things. Here at Buns and Roses we’re great fans of the annual song-a-thon spectacle and decided to commemorate it this year with a Eurovision themed quiz at Leeds Crowd of Favours.

Tension was high in the first round looking for names and nationalities of previous winners, with groantastic cryptic clues like “Dangled doll on a ground down beach” For Sandy Shaws’ ‘Puppet on a string’ followed hotly into the “Terry or not Terry” round, deciphering whether actual quotes from previous years live broadcasts had been the not so subtle sarcasm of the late great Wogan, or the bitchy bravado of Graham Norton.

European geography round “Have you got a flag” and Euro-history in “as English as Queen Victoria”, gave a welcome relief for the quiz mastering continental art and literature round, just to prove we’re not all song and dance.

With the winning prize going to…..the team that had 3 members who had been at this year’s final in Stockholm. That’s hard core specialists if we ever saw them!Buns & Roseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08942011593906466539noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2924719233912565634.post-44895952982422260012016-06-30T12:06:00.000-07:002016-08-17T01:09:51.621-07:00

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I Just Haven't Met You Yet - May Meeting

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
May was hot indoors and out at Leeds WI with our lovely speaker Martine Scannel talking about Courtship Gestures - Or How We Girls Rule! - the behavioural psychology of people when they flirt and the advantages of mastering the often unnoticed courtship dance.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
We learned how men puff it up in an attempt to man up and to impress the ladies, whilst the ladies poke them out, pull it in, swish their hair and flash their Pandora bracelets when they want the chaps to know they are keen…and it’s the people that can read these often unconscious signals that often get the girl.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
However, studies have shown that women call the shots, with them being the initiators in the courtship dance in 90% of interactions, which puts the ladies in the power if they know how to use the right dance moves, but watch out for those over the shoulder glances and pelvic tilts or people may think you’re doing the Time Warp!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
Many of us were scribbling furiously, including one of our assistant secretaries who pointed out “since I got married I want to avoid guys chatting me up, now I can use these tips to head off any likely Lotharios before they even get started”.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
Even more funny was learning about unconscious displays of masculinity, which has left many of us thinking we will never look at chaps on a sports pitch line up the same way again.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
By the end of the evening we were much better educated in subconscious human gestures and interactions with everyone taking away something from the meeting, whether it be how to use body language to your advantage in a male dominated meeting, to developing the ability to make chaps come to talk to you as if by magic at the next party.

Buns & Roseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08942011593906466539noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2924719233912565634.post-75964048516310162972016-06-08T00:23:00.000-07:002016-06-08T00:24:22.025-07:00We Will Frock You - May Workshop

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Our guest speaker for
this meeting was Jean who had travelled all the way from Sheffield, where she
is also a WI member. <span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">We welcomed her and
everyone to the workshop including new and regular members.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Jean started the
workshop talking about colours and how the seasons influence colours and our
clothes and the current fashion trends (backed up by some images of current
fashion trends in New York at the moment). <span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Jean explained about
spring colours such as green and yellow and about everything coming to life in
this season. These colours when we wear them can also indicate new beginnings
and ideas and have links to nature. We tend to drift towards colours such as
these as well as fresh pinks and whites this time of year as our energy rises
and we feel young and alive as the spring is here.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt;">Summer months bring more colours
into our lives including reds and pinks which we associate with love. The
summer months and more colour in the summer clothes in the shops help us to
feel lighter, brighter and better in every way

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Autumn brings colours of
life turning a circle with golden and brown tints - again seen in nature as
leaves fall from trees. Brown is the colour of mother earth.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Winter is when life’s
balance restores and we tend to associate red and green with this time of year,
especially at Christmas time. The red signifies love and green relates to
money and energy, of course Christmas is a time for both of these!

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">As human being we tend
to compliment nature with our clothes but we do not necessarily have to copy
nature, so you can in fact wear any colour any time of the year!

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Other popular colours we
wear created by fashion include white - Jean told us how most clothes are made
white and then dyed to match that period of time’s must have colours.

Grey is associated with
self denial and fear and holding oneself back. On a grey day we feel down and
this is reflected in our grey choice of clothing. Black clothes tend to be
mysterious but when partnered with say a red blouse, the red stands out more
and is thought to give one physical power - so a good choice to wear for an
interview maybe! We can also pair black with pink for social power and yellow
for intellectual power!

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">It was quite
entertaining that pink is associated with royalty and incidentally our
treasurer was dressed in pink and gave us a royal wave!!

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Jean explained that
calming colours like pale blues and pinks tend to be seen in shops for babies
clothes as these are seen as calming and nurturing colours.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">At half time we had a

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">This involved a bit of

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 1 is leadership, those who have initiative and are not
afraid of using it. They are independent, often forward thinkers and can
be pioneers in their field. They accept responsibility and are always
active in one way or another.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 2 vibration the orange ray<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 2 adaptability, can hold back, leads one to
harmony. Orange creativity, self expression, leading to
confidence. Virtues purity, holiness

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Adaptability leading to harmony, this vibration is duality, and we
live in a world of duality, day and night, positive and negative, male and
female. Number 2 is the opposite of number 1, who is very definite.
These people are adaptable, and they avoid conflicts but have strong moods and
feelings.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 3 vibration the yellow ray<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 3 the pure artist. Yellow intellect,
ideas. Virtues wisdom, discernment, right judgement.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Creativity here we have the pure artist. To create is one of
the highest expressions a person can achieve on earth, and we can create at
many levels: children, works of art, beautiful surroundings but what we create
we have to live with and this needs to be remembered by the number 3 vibration.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 4 vibration the green ray<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 4 Practicality, self-discipline. Green energy,
balance, harmony. Virtues compassion, understanding, kindness.
Generosity. Humility.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">The ray of practicality. Ask a four vibration to do anything
for you and here we have the willing workhorse. Everything has to have a
meaning and purpose for them but they are realistic and objective. They
either have a lot of self-discipline or will have incarnated to learn
self-discipline: that is the essence of the four vibration.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 5 vibration the blue ray<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 5 communication, a tendency to go down too many
avenues. Blue intuition, awareness. Virtues faith, trust, loyalty and
integrity (same as indigo).

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">The number of communication. These people have to watch they
do not go down too many avenues and waste time; they need to find a goal and go
for it. The person who is a five vibration has a need to express
themselves in many ways, through speaking, writing, singing, communications in
some way, otherwise they can become withdrawn – a negative aspect of the blue
ray.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 6 vibration the indigo ray<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 6 responsibility, the organiser. Indigo power with
knowledge and understanding. Virtues faith, trust, loyalty and integrity
(same as blue).

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">This is the number of responsibility. These people must
watch they do not take on too much. Efficient and very capable, whatever
they undertake will be done well. They can organise and delegate and are
good at running events of any kind. They are home lovers, their home is
their sanctuary. They are very caring and could be good therapists in any
field or run a clinic, or an office. They need to be with people for
balance as they tend to be loners.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 7 vibration the violet ray<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 7 sensitivity, insight. Violet high ideals,
inspiration, intuition. Virtues sacrifice, unselfishness.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Sensitivity and insight. This vibration is associated with
extra-sensory perception, an awareness of other dimensions. Many are
mediums with this number; they can also be practical mystic, earthing the
knowledge they receive to enable others to understand.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 8 vibration the silver ray<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 8 balancing of spirit and matter, material affairs,
business acumen, success. Silver unifying knowledge with awareness.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">The eight vibration is the balance of spirit and matter, the eight
being formed by 2 circles, one on top of the other (‘As above, so
below’). Above are the heavenly worlds and below is the earth – here are
the two principles working together: spirit and matter, the masculine and
feminine, which are within each and every one of us. We are spiritual
beings living and working in matter.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 9 vibration the golden yellow ray<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Number 9 service, benevolence, giving oneself with no thought of
reward.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">This is the number of service. To serve for the sake of
serving with no thought of any reward is the highest vibration that mankind can
tune in to, and so often the reward comes anyway. We should not look for
results of what we are doing, just to give of our time and energy in whatever
way the spirit moves us is enough. All this is contrary to the
materialist of today who is always looking for profit, but there is a time and
place for us all to arrive at these points in life and we should allow others
their space to experience life the way they wish to.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Jean also gave colour and style tips to the ladies that asked and
we all then chatted and said our goodbyes.

<span style="font-family: "lucida sans unicode" , sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Thank you to Jean for
coming over to run this session and hopefully we all took something away from
this!

happy 7th birthday Buns & Roses! Yet again it’s been an exciting year
and I’m going to run through some of our highlights with you all!

I’ve
now been involved with Buns & Roses for nearly 6 years, on the committee
since 2012 and president since 2013 and the time has just flown! My first
meeting was back in Mojos and I learnt the skill of horror make up from
Gloria’s sister – the results were terrifying! I’ve made some wonderful
friends and learned some amazing skills like how to make a fascinator, how to
melt chocolate with the greatest ease (tip being a hairdryer!) and tried on
diamond rings worth over £30,000. I’m sad to be stepping down as
president, but with a very healthy 46 paid members and a great committee and
new president I look forward to seeing how Buns & Roses evolves sitting at
meetings as a member and being able to craft a chat!

What
has always been important for me as a member and what drew me to the group was
how friendly and welcoming we are. For those of you who don’t know the
story, founder members Georgiana and Zoe went to a craft group and were made to
feel so unwelcome to the point that the other members left without even saying
goodbye to them! They decided that it could be done better! All our
founder members were most concerned with ensuring that Buns & Roses WI was
a welcoming and friendly group and this has continued to be the theme for us
throughout the last 7 years and is certainly one of the things that I'm most
passionate about.
let's have a quick look back over the last year...

As
always we’ve strived to listen to members and arrange a number of varied
meetings including make up workshops, fascinator making, yarn craft, lots of
general meetings because we all know you wanted to chat! We heard from
extremely inspiring speakers including Adam from The Real Junk Food Project and
had a very over subscribed Gin Tasting Meeting! We love the fact that our
members and visitors are from a mix of people from different ages and
backgrounds and we are working hard as a committee to ensure that we meet the
needs of as many of our members as possible.

This
year our big trip out was to Whitby by popular demand and we had a great day
searching for seaside tat, enjoying the SUNSHINE, scoffing fish and chips and
trying to win our fortunes in the arcades.

Siobhan
Maguire-Broad continued to look after Book Club until her University studies
took over and very handily recruited Siobhan Ashburn to take over and both
Siobhan’s have ensured that it is a fun, relaxed and cake filled environment to
discuss a wide range of novels and regularly has up to 10 keen readers or cake
consumers debating the merits of the plotlines, movie adaptations or book covers.

We’ve
had a few committee changes, mostly lots of our lovely Roses have been mega
keen to help out and so we now have bumper committee meetings with Grace-Ann as
Treasurer supported by Clare-Marie and Louise, Lauren remains in charge of MCS,
Amanda Hill has helped with the most amazing secretarial support and timely and
well written minutes and agenda’s ever – I’m so grateful for your organisation
as it has helped with my extremely chaotic nature. We’ve also had fresh
new input from Julie-Anne, Emma, Sarah, Lisa, Georgina, Stephanie and
Caroline.

We've
continued to have a presence within the media with Buns & Roses being
featured in Grazia in the last few weeks as well as a couple of slots on BBC
Radio Leeds – including back in October when I went head to head against the
ex-editor of Loaded to explain why the WI is a necessary female safe space.

We've
got exciting things to look forward to in 2016 including Beer Tasting, learning
to play the Ukulele, mental health as well as more general meetings to allow
members to socialise and get to know each other as well as our trip to Formby
and Southport on the 30th April and so thank you to all the
committee for helping to make it happen and to all our members for making it
possible and if anyone would like to be more involved or has any further
suggestions for forthcoming events and meetings, please get in touch.
Last Thursday I ran my first ever class called “You make me feel like a natural woman” for 17 wonderful women who booked on to make completely natural bath bombs, toner and make up remover, with no additives and to watch a demonstration on how to make your own natural moisturiser. If I’d thought about it at the time I would have called it “Let’s all make a (bath) bomb” which is an old Heaven 17 song from the 80’s!! But you are all probably far too young to remember them!

I had very mixed results with my first efforts to produce a moisturiser, it had the consistency of car wax, but boy was I proud of my efforts and I used every last bit, even though it did make me waterproof! After 4 years of trial and error I realised that I had to be very accurate with my ingredients and a neighbour told me to use a blender to make it lighter and creamier and hey presto I can now make a very decent face and body moisturiser.

I demonstrated how easy it was to make a simple moisturiser to the assembled group, and we all had a sample to see what they thought of it and I think everyone was pleasantly surprised how easy and quick it was to make.

Then it was time to get everybody involved, we had come here for everyone to get stuck in and make bath bombs, so we all weighed out our dry ingredients, then mixed our wet ingredients and dripped the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, whilst mixing furiously, to try and achieve the consistency of wet sand. By that I mean that the mixture is clumping together when you crush it in your hands. There is a knack to it and I have to admit I had made at least 6 lots of bath bombs at home, with varying degrees of success. My first attempt was a great success – but that was just beginner’s luck. I had many failed attempts as well. There was a delicious scent in the air on Thursday and some wonderful coloured bath salts were made, some of us even got our bath bombs to keep their shape! But I tried again when I got home and I think I know what makes a successful bath bomb now. Drum roll – you have to keep it in the mold and take it home in the mold. It is so fragile otherwise. I had made two beauties to show, one heart and one ball and they were perfectly formed, but the heart collapsed midway through the evening as I had taken it out of the mold, whereas the ones I left in overnight are rock solid! Never mind – the bath salts can be put in a jar with a little spoon and still make your bath smell wonderful and your skin smooth. Practise definitely makes perfect. So keep practising ladies!
Everybody went home with a little pot of moisturiser (here’s 17 I made earlier!) and their home made products. It was a lovely evening and there was lots of laughter and mess!! I hope everyone had a good time and I hope everyone learned something and will have another go at home.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">On a more serious note though, Diamond blackfan anaemia is a
blood disorder which prevents the creation of red blood cells, leaving victims
chronically under weight (we heard about a little three year old girl that has
to use a medical feeding tube at night to keep her weight up), having to have
regular blood transfusions to get red blood cells, dialysis to remove
unfiltered iron from their blood and with sclerosis of the liver as a result.
Some lucky sufferers will find a bone marrow match and become strong enough to
receive a bone marrow transplant. This can cure the disorder. If you are not
already on the bone marrow register you can apply here

January started as we mean to go on with another full house for ‘Talkin Bout a Resolution’s general meet, craft and national resolution discussion running alongside membership renewals and a jolly good time.
The committee were on full form with their introductions, finance updates and branch information round up before leading the us into the Bunny-Battle-Loyal, with our lovely ladies putting the case forward for the 8 proposed national resolutions.

To give you a roses-recap, every January the national WI asks us to decide which worthy cause we would like them to campaign for publicly and with government. Such worthy causes as a parents right to stay overnight (first 24hrs) for a child admitted to hospital and increased awareness of the Organ Donors register have been some of our ever so successful campaigns as a national federation working together in unison..and together we are a mighty force!

Ban the microbead, the Brightest Bouncy Bunny that is our own Steph explained to us how those little hyper absorbent grains in make up and nappies to name but a few offenders are clogging up the sea floor and killing fish! Step also spoke out on the Prevention of sudden cardiac death in young adults in the UK imploring the Government to put in place a national strategy for the prevention of young sudden cardiac death to ensure that all young people between the ages of 14 and 35 have access to heart screening by appropriately qualified professionals to identity any potentially life-threatening conditions.

British fruit: reviving our heritage Our own Legal Eagle Emma spoke out for a campaign that creates a fruit revival in local communities, celebrates our WI roots, promotes health, addresses food security and whilst reducing the carbon footprint. Emma then went on to Avoid food waste, address food poverty calling on all supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to avoid food waste, thereby passing surplus food onto charities thus helping to address the issue of increasing food poverty in the UK.

Free sanitary protection for homeless women The Roaring Rose, Julie-Anne urged us to campaign for homeless shelters to be provided with a funding allowance to enable them to provide sanitary protection (tampons and towels) for homeless women and Mind or body – equal funding for care Calling upon the Government to ensure that the care of people with mental health issues to receive equal precedence with physical illness within the NHS..

First aid to save lives Our Ever-Caring Clare asked us to consider that suffering could be minimized and lives could be saved if more members of the general population were trained in first aid. The Government should therefore promote first aid training in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.

Finally, our own Princess Di of the WI, Grace-Ann spoke to us on Appropriate care in hospitals for people with dementia proposing the WI pressures the Government and the NHS to provide facilities to enable carers to stay overnight with people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia that have been admitted into hospital and often become disorientated and distressed, without the mental capacity to understand their situation as a result of their illness.

And Appropriate care in hospitals for people with dementia ultimately was the resolution you lovely ladies cast the most vote for and the resolution behind which we will be asking the national federation to put its’ force behind.

Thank you all you lovely people!
